GD027 Atmospheric Scientist
This position is for an atmospheric scientist/AIRS science data specialist and requires a highly motivated individual with typically 5 years of scientific analysis, algorithm and software development experience with specific familiarity of the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) data structures and formats and products.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated and detailed familiarity with AIRS science data products, both in scientific applications and the associated internal structure. The ideal candidate will also be able to participate in and support the full lifecycle scientific software development including requirements analysis, design, prototyping, coding, unit testing, integration, and operational user support.
The AIRS Science Data Specialist is expected to solve complex problems with little or no oversight and have the ability to proactively engage the science community to seek new partnerships and opportunities, respond effectively to AIRS science data user questions on technical and scientific issues, provide technical and scientific support in enhancing and extending AIRS data and information services. As such, excellent communication skills (written and oral) are a must. The candidate will also have demonstrated capability and interest to learn and apply new technologies to tasks at hand and commensurate familiarity with common data formats, data analysis tools, and programming languages (HDF/HDF-EOS, netCDF, IDL, Python, Perl, C/C++, FORTRAN).
Requirements:
- Ph.D in physical, earth, or computer sciences, with 2+ years experience in hands on processing of atmospheric (AIRS) data, or M.S. and 5+ years experience
- Commensurate familiarity with common data formats, data analysis tools, and programming languages (HDF/HDF-EOS, netCDF, IDL, Python, Perl, C/C++, FORTRAN).
- Development in Linux/Unix environments.
- Excellent written, oral communication skills and interpersonal skills in working with internal and external customers.
- Must be US citizen
Desired skills:
- Experience in a civilian government contracting environment.
- Experience in using XML related technologies.
- Track record of scientific publications, presentations and interest in pursuing proposals and grants for additional funding support.
